Kenya conjures up a lot of imagery for people, the snow capped mountain of Kilimanjaro, the migration of the wildebeests, zebras, lions, elephants on safari, the Nomadic Massai tribesmen, The brilliant colors......It is ALL of that, but it is also home to some of the worst poverty in the world.

The Kibera slum, is said to be the worlds largest with an estimated 700,000 people living there packed in a 3,000 people per hectare, and thats just one of them, one out of the 199 slums located within the city of Nairobi. The numbers get staggering....fast. 40% (1.6 out of 3.5 million) of the city live like this, with no running water, no electricity, no sanitation, no public assistance whatsoever as the city doesnt officially recognize the slums as citizens.

Bread of Compassion set out 4 goals on their trip to Nairobi

  • Build an orphanage inside the Mtumba slum and renovate the existing structure so that it may be converted into a school
  • Provide free medical and dental care to the residents there (as well as in other places)
  • Provide education on hygiene, conduct leadership seminars
  • Distribute supplies to the teachers
