Haiti, April 11-19, 2008

Imagine taking six professional nurses from large city facilities who work with the latest medical equipment available and dropping them into the mountains of Haiti. There is no electricity or running water, as a matter of fact, clean water is scarce and the people collect rain water to survive.

Just picture walking into a village and asking the people who live there to bring their homemade tables, chairs and water so you can set up a medical clinic for the day. Clinic supplies stored in large plastic bins are quickly unpacked by everyone and nursing stations appear (one for each nurse), a pharmacy, a wound care station and a baby washing area. One nurse walks through the crowd triaging patients who seem critical, moving them to the front of the line. Nurses are doing primary care one minute, but in the next minute, they are consulting in the wound care station or helping to fill prescriptions because the pharmacy is backed up.

Some team members are traffic controllers or monitors. They make sure that waiting patients get to a nursing station to be seen when it is their turn and then are directed to the pharmacy or wound care, etc. Pharmacy workers pour worm medicine and Vitamin B12 elixir constantly while others are filling prescriptions for antibiotics, pain relievers, antacids and whatever other meds we have bought with us.

The most important people in the clinic are the patients who have come from their homes in the mountains. Many have walked long distances with little food or water and some even spent the night outside with small children hoping to get seen at clinic. The last clinic at these villages was a year ago and many have been waiting with infections, burns, tumors, etc. for someone to come. It was thru the grace of God and the generosity of so many people that we were able to accomplish so much in the clinics. Many people felt that these clinics were a message from God that He cares about them personally and they are not forgotten in the mountains of Haiti.
